Checkups help you prevent dental problems and emergencies, which can save you time, money, and potential discomfort. Many dental problems are painless and do not produce noticeable changes until damage is quite extensive. Early detection of tooth damage, like decay, cracks, chips, and wear, allows us to provide the most conservative and efficient treatment. We also screen for oral cancer, a disease that affects more than 30,000 Americans each year. Oral cancer can be deadly, but early detection significantly improves prognosis.
Gum disease is another sneaky problem that we try to catch early. It has been linked to stroke, heart attack, osteoporosis, low-weight births, and other health risks, and it is the leading cause of tooth loss in American adults. Dental disease in general is shown to increase a person’s risk for many systemic diseases. To answer the original question, you need regular checkups to help keep your teeth and gums healthy, which promotes good overall health.
Essentially, it means a treatment plan that is tailor-made just for you based on your current conditions, risk factors, prognosis, and desires. During your initial comprehensive exam, Dr. LeVos will consider four areas: 1) gum & bone, 2) tooth structure (which includes cavities, defective & cracked restorations), 3) bite & chewing (how your teeth come together), and 4) smile characteristics. All of our treatment recommendations are designed to lower your risk for problems in these areas. If you are not at risk, treatment is not required.
Yes! Floss loosens food particles, plaque, and tartar trapped between teeth. In addition to irritating gums, causing gum disease, and promoting cavities, these three culprits cause bad breath. If you need help learning how to floss quickly and effectively, our hygienist will gladly teach you some tricks to make your daily oral care easier.
You’ll need to first schedule a consultation with Dr. LeVos. He can assess your oral health and discuss options for replacing teeth. In general, you can choose from fixed bridges, partial or full dentures, or dental implants. As one of the most natural (both in appearance and feel) replacements for missing teeth, dental implants offer a long-lasting, comfortable, natural-looking choice. Whatever you choose, our goal is to make it look and function as natural as possible.
Digital X-rays offer several benefits over traditional radiographs: they’re convenient, safe for the environment, provide a great opportunity for patient education, can be transferred and copied accurately, and best of all, they’re safer for our patients. Digital X-rays require about 80-percent less radiation than traditional methods.
